About my writing - The Rock Band Project

For my research, I decided to write a paper on rock bands as an organization.

When we think the music as their products and band members as the employees, rock bands can be said that they are part of the world's biggest companies, and the important part is that the products are made by close cooperation of members.

As I was researching, I found a very interesting website, which is called "The Rock Band Project". This is the introduction movie of the project.

Not only that this website will be inspiring for my research, but also this will be fun for everyone who likes music and have interest in managing teams. It is really worth visiting.

Down below is my research proposal.

If the term "rock band" was replaced by "company", and "their music" by "the product", some rock bands can be said that they are part of the biggest companies that provide their product all around the world. This paper will look what makes a rock band a big enterprise from the idea of managing organizations. The points that seems to be essential for stable economic growth of rock bands are: a manager with good leadership, and keeping the balance between the members.
The Beatles made a huge success in sales, but actually the band  lasted only for about 10 years, so it can be said that they could start an innovation, but couldn't keep that. Vivec Tiwary analyse Brian Epstein, who was the manager of the Beatles but have died in the mid of band's career, in an article by Ruth Blatt. Tiwary thinks Epstein's dedication and enthusiasm for the band was great, but because he did not let the band member or other staff be in his job and others didn't think it was a problem, and he did not have a private relaxing time for his own, Epstein started to feel lonely and later lead to overdose of drugs, and his death(2013). The death of the manger in the middle of the career is one of the popular reason for the break-up of The Beatles.
Ruth Blatt focuses on Robert Plant, who is a lead singer of a band Led Zeppelin(2013). She says that Plant's position and power in the band was comparatively low to the lead guitarist and the drummer, so he always wanted to a solo project. The big reason of break-up of the band may be the death of the drummer, but Blatt claims in her article that "For any team to sustain itself, its members should learn to accept and manage the tension between suppression for the sake of the collective and expression for the sake of the self."(Blatt). These two sources show the importance of a manager, and the balance of power between band members.

  1. Hi Kengo,

Thanks for these posts. I am glad to see that you are addressing the text, at least to some degree, and I really like the idea that rock bands are indeed organizations, and some bands are much better examples than others in doing it right over a long period of time.
